Volunteer Steve Birnie

Steve Birnie  - greeting krazy klimbers at the summit since 2013!

A prolific fundraiser and long-term volunteer with CPA, Steve has been with the Klimb since its second year. A key member of the crew, Steve provides the encouragement needed at the highest checkpoint!

Many years of volunteering has given Steve an appreciation of what it takes to do the Klimb:

“I have learned that there are no limits to what people with CP can achieve, and that their determination to complete events and challenges is inspirational”

Volunteers play a crucial role in the Krazy Kosci Klimb and without them the event would not be possible. Having witnessed so many klimbers cross the finish line, Steve gives this advice:

“Do not take this lightly. It’s a significant challenge to get up and down Mount Kosciuszko and complete the 18k distance, so ensure that you and your team train appropriately.

Take time to enjoy it! The day goes very quickly but it is something you will remember for the rest of your life. So take lots of pictures, and stop and take in to enjoy the view at various points on the climb.”

Steve also explains what klimbers can expect to see at the checkpoints  - “Food and fun in equal measure“. The checkpoints have become a highlight of the day with different themes that get better and better each year. Klimbers can expect to be fed and entertained as they take a well-earned break from the efforts of the klimb.

Steve’s motivation as a volunteer is to give people with cerebral palsy an experience of events that they may not otherwise have access to, or to help them achieve their specific goals.

He also talks about the joy of being at the summit each year and witnessing the Klimber’s reactions as they reach the top:

“ I always say that this time is the highlight of my year - when the participants reach the summit. Seeing the joy and sense of achievement on each of their faces, it is wonderful”

And who would be Steve’s ideal Kosci Klimbing companion?

‘Robbie Williams - I think he would be entertaining on the way up and down. Plus, he could play a couple of songs at the presentation dinner later in the evening!’
