We're taking part in the Krazy Kosci Klimb!
Please support Abby and her team to raise money for Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the many services our family receives.
Abby was born with a rare genetic condition which affected her development in all areas. This condition was not diagnosed until she was 13 years old after a migrainous stroke left her completely paralysed down one side for 9 days and in hospital for 3 weeks. With hard work and determination she made a full recovery and now at 17 years old and after countless appointments, therapies and services, Abby is on the brink of becoming an “adult”! With 1 more year left of schooling until she enters the “real world”, we hope she can continue to strengthen the skills we have all worked so hard for her to achieve and continue to build on developing new skills which will support her independence as an adult.
In January 2018, Abby underwent double foot alignment and calf lengthening surgery. This surgery straightened her feet and allowed her to comfortably weight bear and walk using her walking frame. The surgery entailed cutting both ankle bones on either side and using a bone graft from her hip to wedge her feet into a straight formation. 7 metal pins were used to straighten her toes and 3 incisions were made in her calf muscles to release her calves. After 1 week in hospital, 6 weeks non-weight bearing and 10 weeks in plaster casts, she is now wearing AFO’s (leg splints) for 23 hours per day to maintain alignment. Although post surgery was tricky, she was an absolute trooper and dealt with everything so well. When she could finally weight bear, she has been tough with the pain and pushed her way through with physiotherapy every couple of weeks and gym sessions every week through Cerebral Palsy Alliance. She is now able to walk on the tread mill for 15 minutes and is continuing to improve each week.
The Cerebral Palsy Alliance has been an amazing source of services and support for us for many years and will continue to be a very important part of our lives as Abby faces her new challenges.
We are all excited to be part of the Krazy Kosci Klimb and the goal is to get Abby to cross that finish line on her feet!!!!!!!!
Thank you in advance to anyone who would like to support Abby and her team of Krazy Kosci Klimbers.
